Just as the Shame Begins to Lift…
November 29, 2008
With the election of Obama the shame of being an American lifted off my spirit. I had been ashamed since Vietnam and through long association with the condition I could deal with it fairly well until George W. was elected. The shame that had become a fact of life became unbearable and remained so until the recent election of Obama. What a relief.
Then this; Wal-Mart Employee Trampled to Death
Suddenly, witnesses and the police said, the doors shattered, and the shrieking mob surged through in a blind rush for holiday bargains. One worker, Jdimytai Damour, 34, was thrown back onto the black linoleum tiles and trampled in the stampede that streamed over and around him. Others who had stood alongside Mr. Damour trying to hold the doors were also hurled back and run over, witnesses said.
Now I can see something like this happening where thousands of people were starving for weeks and the doors to the soup kitchen opened – but really – Wal-Mart? X-mas shopping?
Please tell me there is nowhere else on earth — oh well. Focus on the positive Trish.
So all of this just strengthens my usual Holiday admonition to do your Christmas (let’s get Christ back in Christmas) shopping here; Go to Heifer International
Heifer’s Mission to End Hunger
A world of communities living together in peace and equitably sharing the resources of a healthy planet.
Heifer’s mission is…
To work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth.
Heifer’s strategy is…
To “pass on the gift.” As people share their animals’ offspring with others – along with their knowledge, resources, and skills – an expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance is created that reaches around the globe.
This simple idea of giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief caught on and has continued for over 60 years. Today, millions of families in 128 countries have been given the gifts of self-reliance and hope.
If you go out in the world to shop be careful out there! And please give mindfully.
