*In Good Company

January 22, 2007

Here is H. L. Mencken on a subject dear to my heart;

“We are here and it is now. Further than that all human knowledge is moonshine.”

Now see! Someone else who believes as I do about knowledge!
I love this guy. Here is another I can relate to;

“Any man who afflicts the human race with ideas must be prepared to see them misunderstood.”

And speaking of politics — Hillary has re-engaged my interest…

“Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under.”

“Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule – and both commonly succeed, and are right.”

And here are a few that are just generally true;

“It is hard to believe that a man is telling the truth when you know that you would lie if you were in his place.”

“Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.”

“There is always a well-known solution to every human problem–neat, plausible, and wrong.”

And finally, H. L. Mencken, on Shakespeare;

“After all, all he did was string together a lot of old, well-known quotations.”

Ahhh… I am in good company 🙂 Trish
