*Dealing with “those people”

This is a response I made once to a student who was frustrated beyond endurance by the attitudes of some work colleagues toward animals. As animal communicators we aren’t necessarily universally understood. This can just as well apply to the arts or any other life pursuit that is out of the mainstream. I think it is fairly good advise even if we are speaking of some other frustration. I offer it up here as a sort of frustration preventive. I hope it may help some.

Well of course we all honor animals for who and what they are to us — companions and teachers and great spirits and on and on….

And we are right. Best to not go on and on about it though, in an environment that is hostile to our feelings and beliefs. It brings up feelings that don’t do us any good and you aren’t going to bring anyone to our side by talking about it anyway.

Each individual on the planet is at his and her own level of understanding about all that is. Most have a very narrow view. We are here to broaden that narrow view but we can only be effective when someone sees a glimpse of that broader view in us and asks us to help them see more. Don’t spend your time and energy worrying about what everyone else thinks. Spend your time and energy where your view is respected and appreciated and makes a difference. Wait for others to ask you, from respect, for your feelings about ANYTHING. In the meantime make yourself the kind of person worthy of respect by staying centered in YOUR life and working from that centered place to grow in understanding day by day. I find that as I do this, people who do NOT share any of my beliefs still are interested in what I do and respect me and what I have to share with them about that. And I respect others who don’t think as I do because we are all on our own path and none is easy and all are valid, as we are one.

So to me the lesson learned from this work is that not only can we learn to respect and appreciate what animals have to share with us. We also learn to respect and appreciate people that are very different from ourselves. If I can talk with an Iguana, I can talk with any human and find something there that I have respect, compassion and love for. That, to me, is the real miracle and the ultimate goal. Love thy neighbor as thyself.

Become one that you can love and respect and you will be able to love your neighbor and they will be able to love you.
